An Interview with Kathleen Risko, LCSW!
1. Please share a few characteristics about yourself what qualify you for the role, what is your educational background, where did you study?
I am passionate about whole-body holistic approaches. I am emphatic and caring and always looking for the root cause of the presenting concern. I have been doing therapy for 4 years and have been in the healthcare field for 12 years. I am currently enrolled in the Integrative Health Practitioner program and will graduate in May. I have a Master's in Administration from Wilmington University and I have a Masters in Social Work and I am licensed as an LCSW
2.Please share what kinds of settings you have worked in as a social worker and what relevant education and training you gained in those settings to work with various age groups or diagnoses.
I have worked in Private Practice doing therapy for 4 years and I have worked in case management for 10 years. I have multiple training in creating opportunities for change, Assessment Pro PASRR training for all hospital, MCO, and nursing home providers, strategies for motivating clients, Suicide Prevention, History & Medical basis of methadone in the treatment of opioid addition, theories of counseling and utilization management, Crisis Intervention, DBT, CBT, EFT tapping, somatic, mindfulness based
approaches, and breath work as well as nutrition for mental health and Eating disorder.
3. Do you have preference to work with any particular sets of people?
I prefer to work with nutrition health and wellness coaching, weight management and anxiety and depression. I also enjoy teaching stress management techniques
4. What are some theories of counseling or philosophies typically utilized by you? CBT? Acceptance theory, adlerian, gestalt, art therapy or drama play. Have you used worksheets in the past or any other tools to help people work through issues?
I love using worksheets to help guide the clients. I have used CBT, DBT, Parts work, EMDR, shadow work and mindfulness techniques.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who is dedicated, committed, and totally invested in providing exceptional clinical mental health therapy services to individuals (from all backgrounds), who are seeking to improve their lifestyles and learn positive ways to decrease anxiety or depression, heal from past trauma and pain, or who simply want to reconnect to that inner light within themselves that has somehow dimmed over time. I have my Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Southern Connecticut State
University and my Master’s degree in Social Work from Widener University. I attained my Clinical License in Social Work in 2018 and and provide individual mental health therapy to many different populations across the entire lifespan.
2.Please share what kinds of settings you have worked in as a social worker and what relevant education and training you gained in those settings to work with various age groups or diagnoses.
I have worked in community-based settings, crisis intervention settings, private practice settings, government funded settings, School based settings, group home and residential settings, and currently in intensive outpatient group therapy settings. My education and training through my degree programs are in Clinical Social Work focused primarily on providing therapy to individuals, families, and groups through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Holistic, Solution Focused, Motivational Interviewing and Strength based perspectives. The settings that I have worked in allowed me to work with all ages from 5 to 78 years old, which is most of the lifespan. I provide clinical mental health services primarily to individuals diagnosed with anxiety disorders , depression disorders, co-occurring disorders, ADHD, PTSD, etc.

My preferred population to serve are those diagnosed with mild to moderate, mental heath diagnoses such as anxiety and/or depression, ADHD, PTSD, and those seeking help with managing stress.
4. What are some theories of counseling or philosophies typically utilized by you? CBT? Acceptance theory, adlerian, gestalt, art therapy or drama play. Have you used worksheets in the past or any other tools to help people work through issues?
I use CBT, Systems Theory, Psychosocial development Theory, Strengths Based Theory, Person in Environment Theory, Crisis intervention Theory, as well as Solution Focused Brief Therapy. I have and still do currently utilize worksheets, mindfulness, and sometimes in-person reiki energy healing to balance chakras as tools in both my IOP group therapy and private practice settings.

Dr. Wilson’s career as an educator has allowed her to focus on practice, teaching, research, and scholarship. She has enjoyed unique opportunities to contribute to nursing’s knowledge base, influence national health policy, and motivate future generations of nurses.
